Paddle weight — power versus control?

Accepted Answer

Lighter paddles (7.3 to 7.8 oz) are faster at the kitchen line and easier on the elbow. Heavier paddles (8.0 to 8.5 oz) hit deeper drives and serve harder but fatigue the arm faster. Most players land in the 7.6 to 8.0 oz range. Each paddle PDP lists weight, core thickness (13 mm or 16 mm), and face material.

Indoor versus outdoor balls — really different?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Outdoor balls are harder plastic with smaller, more numerous holes (40) and survive wind better. Indoor balls are softer with larger, fewer holes (26) and play slower on smooth gym floors. Using one for the other is legal but the bounce and pace are noticeably wrong. Each ball PDP lists USA Pickleball approval and the indoor/outdoor designation.

Court shoes versus running shoes — does it matter?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pickleball involves quick lateral cuts that running shoes' straight-line cushioning is not built for; running shoes torque under cuts and roll ankles. Court shoes (tennis or pickleball-specific) have flatter outsoles and lateral support. The injury difference is meaningful, especially for players over 40. Every shoe PDP lists the court compatibility.
